Gettysburg in 1940

A friend gave us a copy of a Pennsylvania Guide dated 1940. In those days you could reach the town by rail or bus, and there were cabs in Lincoln Square (then called Center Square). You could take flights over the Battlefield for $1-2!

The town then had four hotels – there are now more than 20, and over 20 B&Bs as well.

There were 83 licensed guides (now 150), and their fee – presumably for a two-hour tour – was $2-3 (will be $55 in 2012)!
